Nottingham Forest’s 2022 Championship play-offs ended a 23-year wait for top-flight football. Under Steve Cooper, Forest finished 4th, then beat Sheffield United in the semi-finals: a 2–1 first-leg win at Bramall Lane, a 2–1 second-leg defeat at the City Ground, then victory 3–2 on penalties with Brice Samba the shootout hero. In the final at Wembley on 29 May 2022, Forest edged Huddersfield 1–0, the decisive moment an own goal by Levi Colwill from a James Garner cross. Promotion followed, with Huddersfield controversially denied late penalty claims.
