Aaron Hughes (born 1979) was a long-serving Northern Ireland defender and one of the country’s modern leaders. He won 112 caps (a record for an outfield player) and captained Northern Ireland 48 times, debuting aged 18 against Slovakia in March 1998. Calm, versatile and positionally reliable, he played across the back line (and occasionally in midfield) and scored his only international goal against the Faroe Islands in 2011. Although he initially retired from internationals in 2011, he returned under Michael O’Neill and was rewarded with a place at Euro 2016, featuring as Northern Ireland reached the last 16.
