Jonny Evans (2006–2024) was Northern Ireland’s defensive leader of the modern era, finishing with 107 senior caps after an 18-year international career. A composed, positionally strong centre-back, he became a long-time captain/vice-captain and a constant organiser of the back line. He made his senior debut in September 2006 in the famous 3–2 win over Spain, and later reached the landmark of 100 caps in 2022. Evans was an ever-present at Euro 2016, helping Northern Ireland reach the last 16 in their first European Championship finals appearance.
