George Best (1946–2005) is Northern Ireland’s most iconic footballer. He won 37 caps (1964–1977) and scored 9 goals, debuting at 17 in a win over Wales in 1964. As a winger/forward, Best brought world-class dribbling, pace and improvisation to an international side that rarely matched his club stage. His NI highlights include a celebrated (and controversial) disallowed “goal” vs England at Windsor Park in 1971, plus standout displays such as the 1967 win over Scotland that he rated among his best in green.
