George Best was Northern Ireland’s most gifted attacker of the era, winning 37 caps (1964–1977) and scoring 9 goals, debuting aged 17. Despite his world-class club status, Northern Ireland did not reach a major finals tournament during his international career (the 1982 World Cup came after his NI peak). His standout NI moments included a record-setting burst against Cyprus in 1971 (a lightning hat-trick) and the famous, disallowed “goal” vs England at Windsor Park in 1971.
