Northern Ireland’s 2–0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2016 (Group C) on 16 June 2016 in Lyon (Groupama Stadium) was a landmark result. After a goalless first half played in torrential rain and hail, NI scored their first-ever EURO finals goal when Gareth McAuley headed in Oliver Norwood’s free-kick on 49 minutes. They defended stubbornly, then sealed it deep in stoppage time as substitute Niall McGinn made it 2–0 (90+6). It was NI’s first EURO finals victory, and it kept their knockout hopes alive (they later reached the last 16).
