Northern Ireland’s 1986 story is defined by qualification and a tough finals group. In UEFA qualifying Group 3, they finished runners-up to England to reach Mexico ’86, sealing the place with a famous 0–0 draw at Wembley on the final matchday. At the World Cup, Billy Bingham’s side landed in Group D with Brazil, Spain and Algeria. They drew 1–1 with Algeria (Whiteside scored), then lost 2–1 to Spain (Clarke scored), and 0–3 to Brazil (Careca 2, Josimar), finishing on 1 point and going out in the group stage.
