Malcolm “Supermac” Macdonald was Newcastle United’s swaggering, headline striker of the 1970s. Signed from Luton in 1971, he became a St James’ Park icon thanks to his pace, power and thunderous finishing, hitting 95 league goals in 187 games (1971–76). Worshipped on Tyneside, he spearheaded Newcastle’s run to the 1974 FA Cup final (lost to Liverpool) and later played in the 1976 League Cup final. Brash, fearless and brilliant, he’s still remembered as the classic No.9 of that era—pure “Supermac” theatre.
