Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle United reign (Sept 1999–Aug 2004) is remembered as a modern high point. A local lad made good, he steadied the club after a poor start and quickly lifted performances and belief. After two mid-table finishes, he took Newcastle to 4th in 2001–02 and 3rd in 2002–03, bringing back Champions League football to St James’ Park. In 2003–04, they reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals and finished 5th, before his spell ended early the next season.
