Shay Given was Newcastle United’s long-serving, top-class goalkeeper through much of the 2000s. Signed from Blackburn Rovers in 1997, he became first-choice early on and racked up over 350 appearances in all competitions at St James’ Park. Given was known for his sharp reflexes, command of the area, and big saves—especially in one-on-one situations—and consistently kept Newcastle competitive in the Premier League and Europe. He stayed until 2009, earning multiple Republic of Ireland caps along the way and cementing himself as one of the club’s all-time great stoppers.
