Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne is Newcastle United’s most famous modern homegrown star. Born in Gateshead, he joined Newcastle as a youngster, made his first-team debut on 13 April 1985, and quickly became the side’s creative heartbeat at St James’ Park. In three seasons (1985–88) he played 92 league games and scored 21 goals, blending outrageous skill with fearless flair. His breakout 1987–88 campaign earned him PFA Young Player of the Year, and in summer 1988 Spurs signed him for a British-record £2m, ending his Newcastle spell but cementing his legend on Tyneside.
