Les Ferdinand was Newcastle United’s main striker in the early Kevin Keegan “Entertainers” era. Signed from QPR in 1995, he gave Newcastle pace, power and lethal finishing, quickly becoming a St James’ Park favourite. In 1995–96 he was central to the title push, forming a dangerous partnership with Alan Shearer after Shearer arrived the following summer. Ferdinand scored consistently, was brilliant attacking crosses and running the channels, and helped make Newcastle one of the most thrilling teams in the league. He left in 1997 for Tottenham, but his spell is remembered as a key part of that mid-90s Newcastle peak.
