Diego Maradona’s spell at SSC Napoli (1984–1991) turned a southern underdog into a giant-killer. He became captain, an adored city icon, and led Napoli to their first-ever Serie A title in 1986–87, plus the Coppa Italia that same season. They won a second league title in 1989–90, and their biggest European triumph, the 1989 UEFA Cup. Maradona scored 115 goals in 259 games for Napoli—numbers that underline how central he was to the club’s greatest era. His legacy in Naples is so huge the club’s stadium was renamed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in 2020.
