Paul Fletcher’s Millwall spell was brief but important because he helped lay the groundwork for the club’s rise in the 1980s. Appointed manager in 1983, he took over a struggling side and led them to promotion from the Third Division in 1984/85, finishing runners-up. That success re-established belief at The Den and set the platform for the stronger Millwall side that followed under George Graham and John Docherty. Fletcher left in 1986, so he was not there for the later top-flight breakthrough, but his role mattered: he helped start the climb that eventually produced the greatest period in the club’s history.
