John Docherty is one of the most important managers in Millwall history because he delivered the club’s greatest league achievement. Appointed in May 1986 after George Graham left for Arsenal, he built the side that won the Second Division title in 1987/88 and took Millwall into the top flight for the first time. His team then made an extraordinary start to 1988/89, briefly going top of the First Division before finishing 10th, still Millwall’s highest-ever league finish. Docherty left in February 1990 as relegation loomed, but his status was secure: he remains the only manager to have led Millwall to the top division.
