Les Briley was one of the key figures in Millwall’s rise under John Docherty: an uncompromising midfielder, captain and leader in the side that won promotion to the First Division in 1988. He joined the club in 1984 and made 227 league appearances for Millwall before leaving in 1991. Briley’s importance went beyond numbers — he gave the team edge, discipline and authority in midfield, and was a central presence as Millwall reached the top flight for the first time and then finished 10th in 1988/89, still the club’s highest league finish. Among supporters, he is remembered as one of the defining captains of that era.
