Millwall’s 1988/89 season was one of the most remarkable campaigns in the club’s history. Newly promoted and playing their first ever season in the top flight, John Docherty’s side were widely tipped to go straight back down. Instead, they shocked English football by going top of the First Division in early October and were still fifth at Christmas. A late collapse — no wins in their last 10 league matches — dragged them down to 10th, but it was still an outstanding finish. The strike pairing of Tony Cascarino and Teddy Sheringham drove the run, while The Den became one of the division’s toughest grounds.
