Bernie Slaven was one of Middlesbrough’s great modern strikers and a cult hero of the Ayresome Park era. Signed from Albion Rovers for £25,000 in 1985, he became central to Boro’s recovery after the club’s mid-1980s financial crisis and helped them win promotion in 1986–87, 1987–88 and 1991–92. His own site says he scored 147 goals in 382 games for Middlesbrough, while broader records commonly list 118 league goals in 307 league appearances. He was admired for sharp finishing, penalty-box instinct and his bond with supporters, making him one of Boro’s most loved post-war forwards.
