Mark Schwarzer was one of Middlesbrough’s most important modern players and arguably their standout Premier League-era goalkeeper. He joined in 1997 and went on to make 446 appearances in all competitions for Boro, giving the club more than a decade of consistency and presence in goal. He played in the 1997 and 1998 League Cup finals, then helped Middlesbrough win the 2004 League Cup, their first major trophy, despite an error in the final before recovering well. He was also Boro’s goalkeeper in the run to the 2006 UEFA Cup final and famously saved a late Robbie Fowler penalty in 2005 to help secure European qualification.
