Bryan Robson’s Middlesbrough spell was ambitious, dramatic and hugely important. Appointed player-manager in 1994, he won the Division One title in his first season and took Boro into the Premier League as the club prepared to leave Ayresome Park for the Riverside. He then helped attract star names such as Juninho, Branco and Fabrizio Ravanelli, raising the club’s profile sharply. Robson’s team reached both the League Cup and FA Cup finals in 1996–97, but that season ended painfully with relegation. He later led Middlesbrough back up again in 1997–98 and stayed in charge until December 2000.
