Tony Mowbray is one of Middlesbrough’s defining modern figures, first as a player and later as manager. A local lad and centre-back, he became club captain at just 22 and led Boro through their mid-1980s crisis, helping take them from the brink of liquidation back to the top flight within two seasons. He made more than 400 appearances before leaving for Celtic in 1991. He returned as manager in October 2010, steering Boro away from trouble and later pushing for the play-offs, though his spell ended in 2013. More than anything, Mowbray is remembered on Teesside as “Mogga,” a captain, survivor and club legend.
