Willie Maddren became a Middlesbrough legend after coming through the club’s youth system and spending his entire senior playing career at Ayresome Park from 1969 to 1979; an elegant and composed central defender, he was a cornerstone of Jack Charlton’s outstanding 1973–74 Second Division title-winning side, which earned promotion by a remarkable 15-point margin; Maddren’s reading of the game and consistency made him one of Boro’s finest defenders, but a serious knee injury tragically forced his retirement at just 27; he later returned as Middlesbrough manager in the 1980s and remained deeply associated with the club until his death from motor neurone disease in 2000.
