Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough spell was defined by control, discipline and promotion. Appointed on 13 November 2013 as the club’s first non-British manager, he gradually turned Boro into one of the Championship’s toughest teams to beat. They narrowly missed automatic promotion in 2014–15, then lost the play-off final 2–0 to Norwich at Wembley, but Karanka responded by guiding Middlesbrough up in 2015–16, sealing promotion with a 1–1 draw against Brighton on 7 May 2016. His side then struggled for goals in the Premier League, and he left in March 2017. Even so, he is remembered mainly as the manager who got Boro back up.
