Ugo Ehiogu was a major part of Middlesbrough’s best early-2000s side. Signed from Aston Villa in 2000 for what Boro describe as a club-record fee at the time, he brought power, experience and authority to central defence. Middlesbrough say he made 149 appearances between 2000 and 2007, and he was part of the team that won the 2003–04 League Cup, the first major trophy in the club’s history. He also played in the side that reached the 2006 UEFA Cup final. Ehiogu is remembered at Boro as a commanding, dependable centre-back and an important figure in a landmark era for the club.
