Stewart Downing is one of Middlesbrough FC’s most prominent modern academy graduates: a left-sided midfielder known for crossing, work rate and consistency.
He broke into the first team in 2001 and was part of the squad that won the 2003–04 League Cup, Boro’s first major trophy. Downing then became a key starter in the side that reached the 2006 UEFA Cup final, providing width and delivery from the left.
After moving to Aston Villa FC in 2009, he returned to Middlesbrough in 2015 and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2015–16 under Aitor Karanka.
Across two spells, he made over 400 appearances for Boro, making him one of the club’s most enduring modern players.
