Middlesbrough’s 2015–16 promotion was built on control, resilience and defensive strength. Under Aitor Karanka, Boro finished second in the Championship with 89 points, conceding only 31 goals, the best defensive record in the division. Promotion was sealed on 7 May 2016 with a tense 1–1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Riverside in a final-day showdown between the top two. Cristhian Stuani gave Boro the lead before Dale Stephens equalised, but the point was enough to send Middlesbrough back to the Premier League after a seven-year absence. It was a nervous finish, but a deserved reward for one of the club’s most disciplined modern sides.
