Middlesbrough’s 2004 League Cup win was the club’s first major trophy and one of the biggest moments in their history. Steve McClaren’s side beat Bolton Wanderers 2–1 in the final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on 29 February 2004. Boro made a flying start, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes through Joseph-Désiré Job and a Boudewijn Zenden penalty. Kevin Davies pulled one back for Bolton before half-time, but Middlesbrough held on to seal the win. The triumph also sent Boro into the 2004–05 UEFA Cup, giving the club European qualification along with long-awaited silverware.
