Middlesbrough’s 1994–95 promotion season was a landmark one. In Bryan Robson’s first year as player-manager, Boro won Division One and returned to the top flight after a two-year absence. They finished first in the table, and because the Premier League was being cut from 22 clubs to 20, only the champions went up automatically that season. Promotion and the title were sealed on 30 April 1995 with a 2–1 win over Luton Town in Boro’s final match at Ayresome Park before the move to the Riverside. Uwe Fuchs played a big late role in the run-in, scoring 9 league goals in 13 games.
