Norman Whiteside became a Manchester United hero after emerging from the club’s youth system and making his first-team debut in 1982 aged just 16, combining exceptional talent with a powerful, combative style; the Northern Ireland international became the youngest player to appear at a World Cup at Spain 1982 and helped United win the 1983 FA Cup, but his defining club moment came in the 1985 FA Cup final against Everton, when, with ten-man United deep into extra time, Whiteside curled a magnificent left-footed winner past Neville Southall to secure a 1–0 victory; persistent knee problems curtailed his career, but his big-game goals and fearless personality made him a lasting Old Trafford favourite.
