Juan Sebastián Verón at Manchester United (2001–2003) was the classic “world-class talent, awkward fit.” Signed from Lazio in July 2001 for a British-record £28.1m, he arrived as an elite playmaker with range, bite, and Champions League pedigree. He actually started brightly—scoring early-season goals and winning Premier League Player of the Month (Sept 2001)—but the league’s pace and reduced time on the ball dulled his influence. He still collected a Premier League title (2002–03), but never looked fully “Fergie-proof” and was sold to Chelsea in 2003.
