Chris Smalling’s Manchester United spell (2010–2020) was a mix of steady service and “almost” status. Signed from Fulham in 2010, he developed into a reliable, athletic centre-back—quick across the ground, strong in duels, and usually solid in a deeper defensive line. He was part of multiple trophy wins (Premier League 2012–13, FA Cup 2015–16, Europa League 2016–17) and often had stretches where he looked like United’s best pure defender, especially in the air. But injuries, form swings, and ball-playing demands under later managers limited his long-term role. He left after a successful Roma loan became permanent.
