Rio Ferdinand at Manchester United (2002–2014) was the prototype modern centre-back: quick, composed, and elite at reading danger early, which let United play higher and dominate games. At his peak he was a Rolls-Royce defender—calm 1v1, brilliant in the air, and comfortable stepping out with the ball—forming a legendary partnership with Nemanja Vidić. He made 455 appearances and won a huge haul, including six Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League, plus the Club World Cup and two League Cups.
