John Stones’ Man City career (2016– ) is the story of a ball-playing centre-back who became a Pep-era tactical weapon. Signed from Everton in 2016 for an initial £47.5m, he went from early “errors in possession” criticism to being trusted in the biggest games because of his composure and passing. His defining evolution was the 2022–23 role where he stepped into midfield in build-up, helping City control matches on the way to the treble, including the Champions League. Injuries have interrupted him at times, but when fit he’s been core to City’s title runs; his current City contract runs to summer 2026.
