Alan Hansen at Liverpool (1977–1991) was the definition of classy defending. A centre-back with a midfielder’s touch, he read danger early, stepped out with the ball, and made the game look easy—perfect for Liverpool’s possession-heavy dominance. After arriving from Partick Thistle, he became a mainstay and later captain, forming a legendary partnership with Mark Lawrenson. Hansen won a stack of trophies: eight league titles, three European Cups, and multiple domestic cups, anchoring one of the greatest sides English football has produced. Calm under pressure, positionally superb, and an elite organiser—he set the standard for modern ball-playing centre-halves.
