Liverpool’s “Istanbul” is the 2005 Champions League final on 25 May 2005, when they produced the most famous comeback in European Cup history. Down 3–0 at half-time to AC Milan, Liverpool scored three times in six minutes: Gerrard headed in (54’), Šmicer smashed a long-range shot (56’), and Alonso followed up his saved penalty to make it 3–3 (60’). Milan still had chances, including a point-blank save from Dudek on Shevchenko, before penalties. In the shootout, Dudek’s “spaghetti legs” antics helped Liverpool win 3–2 on pens, lifting their fifth European Cup.
