Martin McGaughey was one of Linfield’s great goalscorers. Nicknamed “Buckets,” he spent most of his career at Windsor Park and scored 317 goals in 533 competitive appearances for the Blues, helping them win six Irish League titles and an Irish Cup. His standout season was 1984–85, when he hit 34 league goals and 57 in all competitions, finishing second in the race for the European Golden Shoe before injury cut his campaign short. He also scored twice against Panathinaikos in the European Cup and won the Ulster Footballer of the Year award. In simple terms, McGaughey was a prolific, iconic Linfield striker.
