Linfield’s 2005 Setanta Cup win was a landmark moment because it made them the first champions of the new all-Ireland cross-border competition. They qualified as Irish League winners, recovered from an opening defeat to Longford Town, topped their group, and then beat Shelbourne 2–0 in the final at Tolka Park on 21 May 2005. That result was a real statement because Shelbourne were strong favourites and full-time professionals. Linfield’s victory brought them €150,000 in prize money and gave the club a notable all-island success. In simple terms, the 2005 Setanta Cup mattered because Linfield overcame the odds and won the inaugural edition.
