Steve Walsh was one of Leicester City’s great modern cult heroes and a central figure in the club’s 1990s rise. Signed from Wigan Athletic in 1986, he became captain and was loved for his commitment, aggression, and knack for big moments. Although primarily a centre-back, he could also play up front, which added to his reputation. He helped Leicester win promotion through the 1994 and 1996 play-offs, captained the side in the Martin O’Neill era, and was part of the 1997 League Cup-winning team. Walsh made 449 league appearances and scored 62 league goals for Leicester, exceptional numbers for a defender.
