Matt Elliott was one of the defining players of Leicester City’s Martin O’Neill era. Signed from Oxford United in 1997, he became the commanding centre-back and captain of a side built on resilience, organisation, and big-game nerve. He made 245 league appearances for Leicester and scored 26 league goals, excellent numbers for a defender. His greatest moment came in the 2000 League Cup final, when he scored both goals in a 2–1 win over Tranmere Rovers and was named man of the match. Powerful in the air and a natural leader, Elliott was central to Leicester’s best pre-title modern side.
