Matt Elliott was one of the defining players of Martin O’Neill’s Leicester City side in the late 1990s. Signed from Oxford United in 1997, he became the commanding centre-back and captain of a team built on resilience, organisation, and big-game nerve. Elliott helped Leicester win the League Cup in 2000 and was man of the match in the final against Tranmere Rovers after scoring twice. He also played a major part in Leicester’s strong Premier League finishes under O’Neill, when the club regularly punched above its weight. Powerful in the air and a natural leader, Elliott was central to Leicester’s best pre-title era.
