Howard Wilkinson (“Sergeant Wilko”) managed Leeds United from October 1988 to September 1996 and rebuilt the club into title winners. He imposed discipline, upgraded the squad (notably bringing in Gordon Strachan, then later key additions like Gary McAllister and Eric Cantona) and won promotion as Second Division champions in 1989–90. His peak was delivering the 1991–92 First Division title—the last top-flight title before the Premier League era—making him the last English manager to win England’s league championship. Later, Leeds had strong finishes and reached the 1996 League Cup final before he was sacked.
