Nigel Martyn was one of Leeds United’s finest modern goalkeepers, joining from Crystal Palace in 1996 and becoming a hugely reliable presence at Elland Road; known for his outstanding reflexes, positioning and calmness, he made over 270 appearances for the club and was a key part of David O’Leary’s exciting side that reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2000 and the Champions League semi-finals in 2001, while his consistency also earned him regular England recognition, and although injuries and the emergence of Paul Robinson eventually reduced his role, Martyn remained a highly respected figure whose performances helped Leeds compete with Europe’s best.
