Paul Madeley was one of Leeds United’s ultimate utility men in the Don Revie era. Debuting as a teenager in the mid-60s, he could play almost anywhere—most famously at centre-back, right-back, and in midfield—and he did it with calmness and intelligence rather than flash. He was a regular through Leeds’ most successful period, winning major honours including two league titles, the FA Cup (1972), the League Cup (1968) and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. He also earned England caps, underlining how highly he was rated.
