Juventus’s 1984 Cup Winners’ Cup was a marker of continental stature. On 16 May 1984 in Basel, they beat Porto 2–1 in the final, with Beniamino Vignola scoring first and Zbigniew Boniek netting the winner before halftime. What made that run important is that it showed a Juve side full of class and control finding ways through difficult ties, including eliminating PSG on away goals and then Manchester United in the semi-finals before beating Porto. It was Juventus’s first and only Cup Winners’ Cup, and it became part of the sequence that led into their 1985 European Cup win.
