Ireland’s 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea mixed controversy with a strong, resilient tournament. On the eve of the finals, captain Roy Keane left the squad after the “Saipan” dispute, but Mick McCarthy’s side responded with big results in Group E: 1–1 vs Cameroon (Robbie Keane equaliser), 1–1 vs Germany (Keane’s 90+2’ leveller after Klose scored), then 3–0 vs Saudi Arabia (Keane, Breen, Duff) to finish second and reach the last 16. Against Spain, Ireland fought back to 1–1 via a late Keane penalty, but lost 3–2 on penalties.
