Ireland’s USA ’94 run under Jack Charlton came through a famously tight Group E with Italy, Mexico and Norway—where all four teams finished level on points and goal difference. Ireland opened with a landmark 1–0 win over Italy, Ray Houghton scoring early. They then lost 2–1 to Mexico (John Aldridge pulled one back late), before a 0–0 draw with Norway sent them into the knockout stage. In the last 16, Ireland went out 2–0 to the Netherlands in Orlando (Bergkamp and Jonk).
