Giovanni Trapattoni managed the Republic of Ireland (2008–2013), bringing a disciplined, low-risk style and strong organisation. His side came agonisingly close to the 2010 World Cup, finishing second in their group and losing the play-off to France in the tie defined by Thierry Henry’s handball. Trapattoni’s biggest achievement was qualifying for Euro 2012, sealed with a 5–1 aggregate play-off win over Estonia. Ireland exited Euro 2012 at the group stage, and Trapattoni left by mutual consent in September 2013.
