Roy Keane represented the Republic of Ireland from 1991–2005, winning 67 caps and scoring 9 goals. A relentlessly competitive central midfielder, he combined ball-winning, tempo-setting passing, and vocal leadership, and he captained Ireland for long stretches. His Ireland story is inseparable from the “Saipan” dispute before the 2002 World Cup, when a row over preparations led to him leaving the squad and missing the tournament. Keane later returned to international duty (2004–05) before retiring. After playing, he came back to the national setup as Martin O’Neill’s assistant (2013–2018).
