John O’Shea was a Republic of Ireland mainstay from 2001–2018, winning 118 caps and scoring 3 goals. Best known for versatility, he played across the back line (and sometimes defensive midfield), offering calm positioning, aerial strength, and reliable distribution rather than headline moments. He featured in Ireland’s squads at Euro 2012 and Euro 2016, and was often used as an experienced organiser in tight, low-margin qualifiers and play-offs. After retirement he moved into coaching, serving as Ireland interim manager in 2024 and later returning as assistant head coach under Heimir Hallgrímsson.
