Mick McCarthy was a prominent Republic of Ireland centre-back, winning 57 caps (1984–1992) and playing at Italia ’90, where Ireland reached the quarter-finals. As manager, he led Ireland from 1996–2002, qualifying for the 2002 World Cup despite the infamous Roy Keane “Saipan” fallout, and Ireland still reached the last 16 (out on penalties to Spain). He returned for a second spell in 2018–2020, steadying results and reconnecting the team with a more direct, organised style.
